5 Course Sicilian Benefit Dinner - Wednesday, February 28th  - 6:30 PM

Guest Speaker:  Chris Wilson, Artist, Entrepreneur

Where do we begin, there are numerous stories to be told.  Owner/Executive Chef of Sotto Sopra, Riccardo Bosio, sent his first group of Sotto Sopra staffers and University of Baltimore’s classmate to Sicilia for a 10 day holiday and learning experience.  Christa Bruno - who on and off for over 20 years worked at Sotto Sopra in the front of the house, Lindsey Plotts - the restaurant’s star manager for three years,  Amanda Massarelli - two years at the restaurant bringing the word hospitality to life and the university classmate, Chris Wilson - who has gone from prison for the ultimate crime to an emerging artist, mentor and entrepreneur.

Chris Wilson, convicted of murder at age 17, incarcerated for life and against all odds, turned his life around. He took the initiative, the due diligence to get educated, get a degree, learn three languages and devised a master plan of what he wanted to accomplish should he ever be released.   Now he runs several social enterprises, including a furniture restoration business and a construction company under the umbrella of the Barclay Investment Corporation, which trains and hires returning citizens.  You can learn more about Chris and his amazing story at his website. Chris will talk about his trip to Sicilia, meeting other artists and the benefits of the University of Baltimore’s Second Chance College Fund.

Your chef for the evening will be our own Christa Bruno, who is not only amazing working with clientele, she is also an accomplished chef, soon to open her own place in Butcher's Hill, Charmed , showing off her Sicilian family roots.

A portion of the evening's proceeds will go to the University of Baltimore’s Second Chance College Program .

University of Baltimore’s Second Chance College Program:   University of Baltimore (UB) was selected to participate in the U.S. Department of Education’s Second Chance Pell Grant Experimental Sites Initiative. UB was among 67 other colleges/universities selected nationwide to offer a post-secondary correctional education program through federal Pell Grant funding. The objective is to provide post-secondary education to incarcerated students prior to release, therefore reducing likelihood of recidivism, and improving outcomes for educational and employment success.

UB’s program is being offered at Jessup Correctional Institution (JCI), a medium-security prison for men. So far, 28 students have enrolled this fall and will study toward a Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies/Civic Engagement degree, with a minor in entrepreneurship. UB has also developed a mentorship and tutoring program for the JCI students. Our mentor/tutors are incarcerated men at JCI who are active leaders and role models in the prison. Many of the mentors have a college education and are strongly committed to higher education.
